In this 2 part series I will walk you through the values of having a media kit for your blog or business, how to create one and what type of information needs to be included for you to get the most value out of it.

What is a Media Kit?

A Media kit is a document or package of promotional materials of a person, company, or organisation distributed to brands, media and others external to the business for promotional use.

Think of a Media Kit as your ‘Business Brag Bag’.

We didn’t create a media kit for nearly two years at The Whole Daily.

We’d formed really great personal relationships with a lot of brands through networking and social media.  We thought this was cool for a while but we then realised that it meant we were operating in a reactive environment and not a proactive one.  We were waiting for brands to come to us – well really, we weren’t thinking about it all that much – and then when they were, we were madly rushing to grab all of our stats and info in a single place and share it with them.

I was receiving emails every week from PR companies or brand managers wanting to gain access to info on The Whole Daily and whether we would partner with them and it wasn’t working for a few reasons.

  • We didn’t have the data they wanted in a consolidated place.
  • Our about page wasn’t up to scratch (it hadn’t grown as we had)
  • Brands didn’t know if we would even be open to collaboration (a serious miss on our part – we are! We are!) 
  • We were wasting our time NOT spending a few hours to get a Media Kit drawn up and designed so that we wouldn’t be left scrambling in the future when brands came to us.

What are the values of creating a Media Kit?

If a brand wants to work with you or are interested in learning more about your business, then a Media Kit is the best place for them to find that information.  The better quality the Media Kit, the higher the chance that it will be sent or shared around in front of the eyes that count.

If a forward thinking brand is looking at creating valuable collaborations with a blogger, then they will more than likely use the information listed in your Media Kit as a basis or proof to the Return On Investment (ROI) that a collaboration may have for the brand.

For example: We ran some sponsored posts with Ford Australia through The Whole Daily where they were able to leverage the fact the our audience was also their target audience when it came to people mover vehicles.

For anyone in marketing or brand placement of an organisation, their being able to find the relevant info on your audience is going to put you in a much better position to open the door of mutually beneficial partner relationships.

And if you’re ever in the market to leverage a talent or blogging agent yourself, then they will absolutely need to know your stats, audience and business information.

Create A Media Kit Yourself

From start to finish, creating a Media Kit for the Whole Daily took me four hours – though it may take you a lot longer or shorter depending on how much info you have and whether you are creative or need to outsource some of the design work.  

For beginner bloggers who haven’t been placed in the market for a long time or who haven’t got a huge amount of data to share or a high volume of traffic, you can add your Media Kit info to your About Page – perhaps in an appendix form or better, through a link placed in your About Page to a fresh webpage that isn’t displayed in your menu.

When you do have some cool ‘Brag Bag’ type info that you want to display or have at the ready for possible partner opportunities, then it pays to have one designed or create one yourself.

I designed ours for The Whole Daily in Adobe InDesign (I use InDesign for all of our eBooks also) and have taught myself how to use that program to a moderate level (I see you design peeps cringing, but I’m improving, I promise!).  I pay $50 a month for access to the entire Adobe Creative Suite and use Photoshop and InDesign the most.

(I am a control freak.)

If you are going to take the time to invest in creating a media kit, please don’t simply whack your typing and stats into a word document. We live in a visual world these days and your Media Kit needs to be a reflection of your branding and personality.

If you don’t have access to PhotoShop or InDesign or you are unsure how to use them, you can create a single page Media Kit with your stats, a picture and your links on a site like Canva or Picmonkey.  Simply set the page or canvas size to 2550 x 3300 pixels (8.5 x 11 inches) to create a US paper sized page.

There is nothing wrong with a single page media kit if it is done right.

Get someone else to create a Media Kit for you

If you simply want to wipe your hands of it and get a pro to create your media kit for you, then this is also a great option.  It will save you time and will (should) come back with a super professional edge.

You can outsource and hire a freelancer on Odesk or Fivvr to do it for you.  As long as you have the relevant info at hand and can articulate your business and brand story so they aren’t flying blind then you will be good to go.  This should cost you anywhere from $15 to $100

You can also hire a professional graphic designer to work with you to create your dream media kit.  This cost will fluctuate and could be anything from $200 to $1000.

Where do I get my website stats from?

Google Analytics is probably the easiest place for you to start to track and then use all of your website stats.  If you use a WordPress site you can simply add a Google Analytics Plugin like the one from Yoast and the open a Google Analytics account.  I have yet to need information that is not displayed in Google Analytics.

You know I am a huge fan of collecting your data because… If you can’t measure it, you can’t improve it!
