21 Ways A Day We Use Essential Oils

As a long-time user of essential oils, I now have what you may consider to be a pretty damn extensive essential oils collection.

Even though I've used essential oils, and had some in my pantry, medicine cabinet or bathroom cupboards at all stages of my life since I was a child, I’ve been deepening my understanding of the benefits of essential oils since I studied herbal medicine in my Nutritional Medicine studies and spent time with an aromatherapist at our Melbourne uni campus.

The oils we use in our home today offer a therapeutic value where the ones I used in my younger years were not only inferior quality, but were actually adulterated with non-organic ‘fillers’ that weren’t the best for my family.

I hope this list of how myself and my family use essential oils inspires you to use your oils more frequently in a way that benefits yourself, your family and your household, or that you are inspired to try them out for the first time. We certainly have days when we use them even more, or in varied ways depending on what we are doing, where we are and what we need to address.

One of the main things I always shout from the rooftops for so many reasons is the versatility of essential oils. This helps reduce cost in other areas where you may be spending to purchase products that can harm your health. Essential oils only offer side benefits, not side-effects.
Who wouldn’t want that?

21 Ways A Day To Use Essential Oils

  1. I choose an oil to meditate with. This typically includes Frankincense or Ylang Ylang oils as I find them really calming and earthy. I diffuse this oil next to my meditation alter.

  2. I spend 5-10 mins in the shower 'pulling' coconut oil mixed with 1 drop of oregano oil through my teeth. Historically, oregano oil is an anti-microbial and anti-bacterial. Oregano oil can help to balance the microbiome in the mouth (yes, we have one in there too!).

  3. I brush my teeth with a home-made toothpaste that includes peppermint oil, bicarb soda, coconut oil and a touch of xylitol for sweetening OR I use the doTERRA OnGuard toothpaste, which is a great formula based around our protective blend.

  4. I roll on a home-made perfume blend made with essential oils diluted in apricot kernel oil. At the moment I adore the sensual notes of patchouli with a touch of citrus like grapefruit though it changes depending on my mood and the day ahead. For example, if I know I need a lot of pep and focus, I may user a peppermint or citrus combined with frankincense or vetiver essential oil.

  5. Amazing perfume essential oils include: Rose, Magnolia, Jasmine touch oils, or the Cheer, Passion, Whisper, Forgive or Motivate touch blends.

  6. My husband Cam rolls on his 'man-blend'. This is usually a blended oil which includes Spruce, Ho Wood, Frankincense, Blue Tansy, and Blue Chamomile. It's masculine and calming. We also stock up on the Amavi blend whenever they release it for Father Day! It’s AMAZING.

  7. Both of my girls roll on their uplifting blend of oils for the day. Sometimes down their spine or sometimes behind their ears and down the sides of their neck.
Since releasing the doTERRA Kids Collection, they tend to choose one of these most days, and take them to school too. Ruby’s favourite blends since day dot has been Cheer or Motivate and Holly loves straight lavender.

  8. I spray a ‘lice-away’ spray on the girls hair from a home made ‘spritz’ bottle. It’s just a combination of lavender and tea tree mixed with filtered water. About 5 drops for each oil for a 30ml bottle.

  9. If I surf, I always mix lavender and frankincense essential oil into my daily moisturiser after I shower to help reduce the signs of ageing, sunspots and wrinkles that may be exacerbated by living an outdoors lifestyle. I make sure to rub this into the backs of my hands to, as they see a lot of sun.

  10. I carry a lot of tension in my shoulders and I work at the laptop most of the day so I often knead some Deep Blue into them to release the tension. This is a blend of Wintergreen, Camphor, Peppermint, Ylang Ylang, Helichrysum, Blue Tansy, Blue Chamomile, and Osmanthus essential oils.

  11. 1 drop of cinnamon essential oil into the girls quinoa porridge for breakfast (made by soaking quinoa overnight, straining and then simmering until cooked and of a thick consistency with coconut milk and water, grating a peeled apple into the mix and adding a spoonful of Gelpro collagen - optional, at the end. I make enough for around 8 serves*.

  12. After breakfast, I diffuse a blend or oil that suits my day in my home office. Mostly this will be an uplifting or motivating and invigorating combination of essential oils that blends euphoric scents to elevate my mood, promote feelings of confidence, and increase my energy throughout the day. My absolute favourite at the moment is Elevation.  This blend includes Lavandin, Lavender, Melissa, Ylang Ylang, and Osmanthus with Tangerine, Elemi, Hawaiian Sandalwood, and Lemon Myrtle to create a unique blend that promotes a positive mood and feelings of confidence.

  13. I’m currently healing a burn on my hand with a mix lavender essential oil and aloe vera. (The burn from touching the oven tray when Holly came up and scared the bejeebus out of me.)

  14. I clean the benchtops with a homemade kitchen spray.

  15. I place 2 drops of lemon oil or wild orange oil in the dishwasher with our toxic-free washing powder. . This leaves the dishwasher smelling amazing and also disinfects our dishes.

  16. Before the kids come home from school, I load the diffusers with clear, happy oils. In the kitchen and lounge so that when they walk in it's a COOL RELIEF straight away.

Frankincense is a must! The oil of truth and light works like an expander and clears negative energy. It's also amazing for clearing the mind and for neurological health.

    Citrus Bliss

    Frankincense and Wild Orange

    Frankincense and Lime

    Elevation Blend and Frankincense

    Cypress and Grapefruit

    Spearmint and Lemon

  17. I place 4 drops of lavender into the girls bath of an evening along with some magnesium salts to help them 'come down' from their day and set them mood and intention for a restful night sleep.choose a calming essential oil such as lavender or chamomile on the girls pillows or teddy bears before bed.

  18. I rub a blend of Sage, Rosemary and Lavender essential oils mixed with jojoba and apricot kernel oil into my hair as a thickener three times per week.(I have thin, flat hair otherwise). My husband also uses this as a hair thickener.

  19. I use a Lavender and Frankincense infused 'Face Balm' to help me with some spots I'm healing on my chin right now and to rub all over my face as a night moisturiser. This also has pure sesame oil, coconut oil and apricot kernel in it for cell regeneration.

  20. I have a large scar across my abdomen I’m healing and supporting after a major surgery this year. I massage a balm made with shea butter and beeswax that includes blue tansy, melissa, frankincense, myrrh and lavender within it.

  21. One of my favourite rituals to wind down before bed (after I set the diffuser and put it on) is to body brush (stimulates the lymphatic system and promotes detoxification processes) and then take a warm shower and apply a natural body oil with calming essential oils. [Blog post: Ten tips for supporting better sleep]

OR simply wash the face and décolletage (above the boobs ;) with a warm flannel and then massage the natural body oil and calming essential oils into it. Massaging and touching clean skin with essential oils that offer calming and grounding properties offers a powerful ritual to the calm and relaxation process.
