The 12 Best Healthy Christmas Recipes On The Web

Christmas time sometimes reminds me about Homer Simpson after he'd eaten an entire packet of donuts. Eeerrghhh donuts....

He had drool coming out of his mouth and he could barely walk... (I'm thinking of you when I write this Uncle Les!) .

Funny and utterly gross, but we seem to do the same to ourselves around the season of giving. Giving ourselves presents with a side of indigestion, fatigue, moodiness, hangovers and the worlds worst gas, because seriously, how many different types of food can you fit into your digestive tract at once.

But today I come with greatness for you.  I am super-happy to share with you a round-up of my favourite Christmas recipes so that you can bake, make and cook with our health in mind and your taste-buds are still going to think it's the Best. Christmas. Ever.

I have taken a tad liberty and included a couple of The Whole Daily recipes in this - but really... they're so good!

All excerpts and pictures are taken from the website of the recipe creator and links to their full recipe are attached in the info.

#1. Vegan Amaretto Snowballs

by Pure Ella

With the first sight of snow falling this year… I made a gasp and smiled. Winter really is a beautiful season and there is something about the cold crisp air, calm and quiet outdoors and squeaky snow under your feet that makes you enjoy every bit. Then there’s the wintery fun when everyone becomes a kid again… snowball fights! We already had a share of those and although it can be rough, it really is a ton of laughter and fun. Of course, sometimes the best part is to coming home to warm up with hot cocoa and a delicious something… like these Amaretto Snowballs!

#2. Brownie Eggnog Pumpkin Pie

by PaleOMG

I can’t decide. I just don’t know. Do I like regular pumpkin pie or brownie pumpkin pie more?? How the hell do I make that decision? If I’m going to be honest with myself, I think I like regular pumpkin pie the most. Yes, brownie pumpkin pie is delicious, but there is just something special about pumpkin pie on it’s own. But I had to try an alteration. And I don’t want to not sell this brownie pie, because I love it so much, but I have to tell you the truth. I just have to. I love my Eggnog Pumpkin Pie the very mostest. That’s a word, right? Right-e-o.

#3. Gingerbread Christmas Trees

Glutenfree-Gingerbread-4

Glutenfree-Gingerbread-4

The Whole DailyI love ginger and I lurrrve gingerbread. Always have. Always will.Since baking and creating with no sugar and no gluten, I’ve adamantly steered clear of a lot of recipes that use standard gluten-free flours that are made of starches and typically need binding ingredients like gums and high GI flours to get them to mimic regular wheat flours.I’ve tried to make cut-out cookies and biscuits before using buckwheat flour and almond meal and have not been satisfied… however my number one 3 year-old and I have stumbled upon the perfect combination of healthy flours and made gingerbread Christmas trees that actually knocked my socks off. With every bite we would look at each other and I would say ‘I can’t believe how good these are, THIS is the recipe… We’ve totally outdone ourselves here babe’.  And she would say ‘Mmmmmm Yuummmm Hmmmm MMmmm’.Full article and recipe here

 #4. Paleo Coconut Ice

by The Merrymaker Sisters

We love this Paleo Coconut Ice recipe! It’s probably the easiest darned thing you’ll ever make! Perfect for a Paleo Christmas and perfect for festive pressies (remember, the best kind of gifts can be eaten!).

We used rice malt syrup in this recipe to sweeten it but you could definitely swap it for raw honey or coconut sugar! Take your pick and enjoy a piece of paleo coconut ice!

#5. Healthy Christmas Cake

by The Healthy Chef

There is nothing more satisfying than baking your own cakes, puddings and biscuits for Christmas.  Around this time of year I’m in my kitchen a little bit more than usual baking cakes and cookies and packaging them up as presents for friends and family.  This is an extremely delicious and simple Christmas cake to make. It’s a part of my great Aunty’s recipe file along with other yummy healthy treats.

This is a dense and moist fruit cake with a high ratio of fruit, which means I don’t need to use any extra sugar in the recipe.

#6. 3-Course Vegan and Gluten-Free Holiday Menu – Step-by-step!

by Oh She Glows

I’d like to walk you through a relatively simple holiday meal plan today for 4 people. Adapt it as you see fit. My goal was to create some dishes that could be made the day before. I also wanted the prep on the day of to be minimal. So no, I’m not throwing a ton of recipes at you today and telling you to spend 3 full days in the kitchen. I did my best to simplify things without sacrificing flavour. It’s a fine line! My prep time the day before was under 2 hours and my prep time the day of was about 1 hour. Not too shabby, right?

 #7. Pumpkin Pudding (egg-free, dairy-free)

by Against All Grain

I’m excited to share this dairy free egg free Pumpkin Pudding with you!

Every year, I try to venture outside of the pumpkin realm when I’m creating festive Fall goodies for you, but I fail miserably and am always lured back by pumpkin and it’s luscious, creamy, orange hued goodness. This Pumpkin Pudding was no exception.

#8. Macqui Berry Balls With Goji Berry Dust

by The Holistic Ingredient

Today's post is dedicated to the cacao/chocolate intolerant among us - by hook or a crook I will find us alternatives people!

These 'balls of bliss' are filled to the brim with the good stuff and are actually a 'functional meal' in a mouthful (albeit a small one). One ball contains protein, good fats, low GI carbohydrates, antioxidants and vitamins and minerals to boot. Best kept in your pantry (that is, out of the fridge), they're a perfect bite sized snack for the between meal hunger attacks (and I'll have you know they go down very nicely with a cuppa post dinner). Do run with the goji dust if you are able, it adds are beautiful 'tang' to your bite.

#9. Frangipane Fruit Pie

by The Whole Daily

I was going to save this recipe until Mid-December, but since I have literally eaten it for dinner and again for breakfast, I can attest to it’s deliciousness times-three and things like this should not really be hung onto for anything. I would recommend trying with some warm homemade custard, or if you’re eating this fresh out of the oven, some organic vanilla ice-cream or thick cream.

#10. Nat's Christmas Choc-Mint Mousse

by Natalie Kringoudis

The main items you will need in making this mousse is some kind of food processor and 5 to 6 small pots or jars. I find those two-dollar shops brilliant for that kind of thing. Keep in mind you’ll be serving your mousse in whatever you use. It’s hard to believe something this delish could be so easy and quite frankly so darn healthy, so that’s enough from me as I know you’re no doubt itching to go get your mousse on!

#12. Paleo Christmas Dinner Menu

by Eat Drink PaleoWith Thanksgiving and Christmas approaching, most of us are starting to feel jittery thinking about how we’re going to tackle all the festive lunches, dinners, never ending booze and sometimes annoying relatives. Some years I get to escape to a beach in Thailand or a ski resort but usually it’s a family affair with lots of fabulous food. We usually do a dinner and it’s always something comforting, hearty and relatively easy.
