Hi there, it’s Alice Nicholls here from The Whole Daily and AliceNicholls.com and I’m here with episode #3 of The Blog to Profit Show. Make Money Online, Smarter.

  • If you don’t want to download or listen to the show (10mins) you can simply read the full transcript below).

Now I’m here to talk to you today about a really big secret in the online entrepreneurs world. Now, this secret is the difference between creating a profitable, profitable and successful business from your blog, or (cough) well I suppose the opposite. NOT a successful online business from your blog.

At the end of this episode of The Blog to Profit Show, you will know the secret that successful online business entrepreneurs rarely talk about, but have all integrated into their path to success. Right?

So THIS is the #1 Secret of Successful Online Entrepreneurs

Pin me!

This is the number one thing all successful online entrepreneurs have done to take their blogs to profit.

Are you ready for the secret?

I saiiiiid ‘Are you ready for the secret’?? (sings)

I know you are.

Okay so when online entrepreneurs start their online blog to profit strategy and for years following that first day, they work really, really hard. And they persevere.

That’s the secret peeps! They work really hard and they persevere.

Now there’s more to it than that right, because we could finish the show there and you’d be like: What? Is that it? I’m doing that!

So let’s get into that a little bit further okay,  They don’t work, you know, really hard just a few hours on each day of the two days off they get from their ‘other’ job kay?

The successful online entrepreneurs work hard and persevere every single day when they start out. Every day!

I remember that when I started my blog, I didn’t know what a blog was, or that other people were actually making a living and a loving doing something online. I didn’t know bloggers made money using an online diary as a platform.

Now, I was working blind really because I didn’t have an end goal in mind at the time and so I can easily look back and see that I lost hundreds of hours working on things that didn’t contribute – at the time – to me making a profit.

Now when I started my blog though, I had a toddler, and when, a year later, I realised I could actually monetise my blog, because holy shit, people were actually doing that, I was pregnant.

Now, when Ruby came along, I still put in the hours, which I had done the whole time I was pregnant and when she was born.

I was committed to working on something I loved so I put in 8 hours minimum on most days, to build a reach and a blog that didn’t give me any particular return financially at the time.

(laughs) So let me repeat that, I put in eight hours minimum on most days to build a reach for that blog that didn’t give me any return at the time.

Now what I did was, I emailed tens of women and men each week and asked them if I could feature on their website. I wrote multiple blog posts each week and I shared them everywhere I could. I focused on business building processes and my list grew. I was making no money at the time but I was working unbelievably hard (I was working really really hard peeps, sometimes until 1am in the morning) and I persevered every single day.

Now, this is necessary hard work that you’re going to have to do. This doesn’t include busting your gut doing something you hate. The only reason that it worked for me is that I loved it so much.

Now, I worked my arse off, into the night, before the kids got up in the morning, when they slept, when my husband took them to the park.

Um, and I know that this might sound extreme.
So I’m certainly not telling you that you should dump your friends, lock your kids in one of those playpens with an iPad or work until you are physically sick. Don’t do that, it’s not going to be good for you. But you are going to have to work harder than you think.

So the way I’m telling you is that ‘this is how hard I worked, this is exactly what I do, this is what I know other successful online business entrepreneurs have done’, because if it can give you some type of a balance as to looking what you’re doing now, and looking at what the success, you know, stories, or successful entrepreneurs are doing, you may have to pump up, or I’m gonna say you’re probably going to have to pump up this smart effort quite a lot. Not dead work, but smart effort.

So, you know, you are going to have to work harder than think and you’re going to have to persevere. And persevere means that you’re going to have to persevere through your successes and your failures.

Now, at the beginning of my own hard work, I didn’t know how long it would last. You know, I didn’t have a genie who would magically come and tell me that if you work this hard and you persevere in two years and exactly 9 months you’re going to be able to launch products and services for $20k or $40k or rival your $180k salary that you were getting from your corporate job, umm, You know, I didn’t know when it was going to happen. You know I had a vision of being able to manage a successful online business form my laptop and I was simply committed to doing everything I could to seeing that come to fruition.

Now two years or three years feels like a huge amount of time if you look at it in that instant today. So if you were to think of two or three years today it can sound pretty big right? Umm and had I known then that it was going to take me two years to grow a highly profitable blog, I may have been discouraged.

And I may have quit. Which is what most online entrepreneurs do when the going gets tough. They quit. Umm and typically they’ll cite external reasons for that umm and you know what? It’s usually them, I’ve gotta be completely honest. You know, I promise it’s gonna stay tough for a long time, if you want to build a profitable online business. I just don’t like to sugar-coat shit, which is why I’m here saying this to you.

I didn’t have an experienced blogger to learn from. I made mistake after mistake after mistake, but I kept going because I couldn’t NOT keep going. I loved it, right? This is a big thing. You’ve gotta love what you do.

And then, whaddya’ know. You were there. I all of a sudden had raving fans there. People willing to spend money to have me help them, they all came along. And this was AFTER the necessary hard work. After YEARS of the necessary hard work.

You know, from zero to 15k subscribers and a profitable online business took me three years of hard work and perseverance. And that included thousands of hours of hard work and perseverance.

But, I’ve got to be honest, most new online business bloggers don’t give it all they’ve got. They don’t. In fact, most online business bloggers who come to me for help are not even close to working the smart hard work that they need to to create that profitable online business. Not even close.

Many come to me and ask me how to increase the LIKES on their Facebook pages. Or, how can I get more people on my list. They will come to me and tell me only 1 or 2 months into their blog to profit journey that they’re frustrated because they aren’t making any money, or that they don’t have any subscribers or followers, or engaged readers.

Is this sounding familiar to you? And you know what? I gotta say…

Have you locked down your WHY today?

Have you written a business plan today?

Have you got a mission, a vision, a set of values?

Have you released a blog post today?

Have you shared that blog post across all social media today?

Have you emailed five people to ask if they will interview you on their websites?

Have you read a business book, or blog today or been to a business seminar for self-development today?

Have you created or begun to create or worked on creating the product or service that you’re going to sell to actually make a profit today?

Have you actually asked people to get onto your list today?

Have you provided really valuable content to those who you want to be your customers today?

Have you served your community and helped those in need, for FREE today?

Have you done any of those things today or a handful of those things today?

Did you do this yesterday?

Or the day before?

Or the day before?

Interesting huh? Most people haven’t. You’ve got to do the hard yards and most people don’t.

The most successful online entrepreneurs did a handful of these, every day, potentially for years.

And then they became an overnight success.

Commit, do the necessary hard work and persevere. Stop with the BUT’s and the excuses. You don’t have any less of an ability than any other successful entrepreneur.

And that’s the secret. You’ve got to work hard. Really hard. Harder than you think. And persevere and THAT is the secret.

Now from Steve Jobs, because I freakin’ love him, this:

‘I’m convinced that about half of what separates successful entrepreneurs from the non-successful ones is pure perseverance.”

Everyone says they go the extra mile. Almost no one actually does. Most people who do go there think, “Wait…no one else is here…why am I doing this?” And they leave, never to return.

That’s why the extra mile is such a lonely place.

That’s also why the extra mile is a place filled with opportunities.

Be early. Stay late. Make the extra phone call. Send the extra email. Do the extra research.

Sure, it’s hard. But that’s what will make you different.

And over time, that’s what will make you incredibly successful.’

So I want to thank you for listening to episode 3 of The Blog to Profit Show. As you can see, it’s those people who put in that hard work, who go the extra mile and who persevere that are able to create much more blog to profit success within their own online businesses.

And yeah… there’s less of those people, which is why there’s so many more people not putting in the effort to get to that place.

But I know you can do it, I’m here to support you and once again, thanks for listening, love to hear feedback from you in the comments section below the post that this podcast is being shared on and I hope you have a magical day.

Alice Nicholls signing out. Bye.

Addendum: I want to add some information post ‘post’, based on some feedback I have had around this podcast and article.

I know that we all have different situations and responsibilities in our lives. Other work responsibility, children, family, commitments that you want to meet, SLEEP etc.

When embarking on your Blog to Profit journey, your blog work needs to fit in around these things (and replace some things you can begin to say no to).

I realise that in mentioning my 8 hour minimum days, that it may have come across that I was telling you you should do this also – work 8 hour minimum days outside of your other job –  to get your blog to profit.

Of course this would be extremely hard for many of you to fit in.

I heard that reading or listening to that section from me made some of you feel stressed or pressured, or feeling as if you weren’t doing enough today. Believe me when I say that it wasn’t my intention nor is that ever my intention.

Stress and anxiety do not breed a great profit building environment. I am exceptionally grateful to the coaching clients I have who pointed out that my podcast and some wording this week may be taken in this way. The fact that they felt comfortable to be honest and share that parts of this podcast felt a bit ‘icky’ is great. Feedback helps us all. (Thank-you ladies!)

When referencing my 8 hour days working on my blog, I shared that much of what I did back then was ‘dead work’. I didn’t know what I was doing, how to monetise, what to focus on or what would benefit my future business and so I literally threw every piece of myself into it plus the kitchen sink.

I worked really (really) hard and I persevered and then I learned lessons which meant that I could work smarter (Less hours, less dead work). I also built my blog to a business in there too.

Will you have to work 8 hours a day on your blog (outside of your current work) to get you to profit state?

I hope not. For some of you, that’s impossible. Will you have to work hard? Yes. Will you have to persevere? Yes.

Those of you who’re already working really hard and persevering are already doing what the most successful entrepreneurs are doing. This may be the time to look at where the dead work is in those online businesses and rid it to create space in that time you do have for business development.

The sole goal of my work with you here is that you can learn how to get rid of work which doesn’t nourish you and your business. And yes, for a few of you, it’s a call to look at what you’re actually doing on a day to day basis to build your blog to profit each day (before you quit because you wonder why nobody is finding you)!

Thank-you for giving me the space to share this addendum with you. Thanks for the feedback and I hope you go and have a wonderful day, doing what you can and not quitting.

You’ve got this!

I love how real you are. It’s all too easy to think that successful bloggers made it big overnight. But the truth that it takes dedication and commitment – long haul – is so refreshing. Thanks for sharing. Xxx
